Each year Baylor Health Care System medical centers provide community education, health screenings, and community health improvement and wellness initiatives to people throughout North Texas. Baylor collaborates with not-for-profit agencies that provide research and education, such as the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, and the Injury Prevention Center of Greater Dallas, to bring awareness to the community about diseases and other prevalent health concerns. Physicians on the medical staff at Baylor, nurses and other employees volunteer to care for medically indigent patients and work with school districts to educate children about various health concerns. For fiscal year 2008, Baylor will report $429.5 million in community benefit to the Texas Department of State Health Services.
The Office of Community Health at HealthTexas Provider Network, Baylor’s affiliated physician group, reaches the medically underserved in Dallas County through Project Access, a pilot project collaboratively designed by HealthTexas, Central Dallas Ministries, Dallas County Medical Society and the Dallas Fort Worth Hospital Council. The program is designed to improve community health status, increase health care access for the poor and expand volunteerism. As part of Project Access, the Office of Community Health coordinates a Volunteers-in-Medicine program with Central Dallas Ministries and other clinics to utilize physicians to treat the medically underserved. The program has shown a reduction in uninsured citizens using Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas’ emergency department for routine medical conditions.
