Marriage Cures Depression

June 18 - They say married couples live “happily ever after.” Now, according to researchers there may be some scientific truth to that. Dr. David Winter from Baylor Health Care System is here to tell us more in today’s HealthSource report.

Good morning Dan.

So Dr. Winter—married life can at times be challenging, but it sounds like researchers found it also has great rewards when it comes to your health?

DR. WINTER
That’s right. A recent study examined relationships and life expectancy and found that those who are married are 50% more likely to live longer than their never-married counterparts.

Even those who are widowed or divorced have longer average life-spans than those never-married.

DAN BELL
Why do you think that is?

DR. WINTER
Experts hypothesize that spouses often encourage you to take better care of yourself—lose weight when you need to, see a doctor when you need to. Spouses can also provide support through life’s stressors.

But one thing this study did not take into account is the quality of one’s marriage. Of course the better the relationship—the better the support system—and in turn, the better your mental and physical health.
