Are You Getting What You Pay for With Sunglasses?

July 9 - They can cost anywhere from $4 to $400 dollars… so do you really get what you pay for with sunglasses. Experts say the answer may surprise you. Dr. David Winter from Baylor Health Care System is here to tell us more in today’s HealthSource report.

So Dr. Winter—do pricey shades provide better protection?

DR. WINTER

Not necessarily. In fact, if you’re buying some name-brand or designer glasses—you may just be paying for style. The actual lenses may not be any better than what you can get at a discount drug store.

So what should we look for if we want a good pair?

DR. WINTER

Well first of all—you do want a good pair. You should not underestimate the damage the sun can do to your eyes over time.

When shopping for sunglasses you really only need to look for one thing—a thin, clear coat put on the lenses to block UV rays. And look closely at the labeling or talk to a sales consultant to make sure the lenses block both UVA and UVB rays—that’s very important.

As far as the color or darkness of the tint—neither matters.
