August 6 - Is it possible to boost your intelligence? Researchers now say ‘yes.’ Dr. David Winter from Baylor Health Care System is here to tell us more in today’s HealthSource report.

Good morning Dan.

So Dr. Winter—is it true—we can make ourselves smarter?

DR. WINTER

Previously we’ve thought that fluid intelligence—our ability to reason and problem solve—was basically an inherited trait. Fluid intelligence is considered one of the most important factors in learning and is strongly linked to academic and professional success.

But now, according to researchers—we may be able to increase this intelligence by improving our memory since they share a common thread—both seem to rely on the same neural networks.

So how do we improve our memory?

DR. WINTER

Well do you remember that game of small cards called “Concentration”—where you pick up one card at a time looking for matches? Researchers found that simple games like that one do improve our memory and therefore may improve our fluid intelligence.

They also say that even little everyday things—like keeping a phone number in mind long enough to reach for a phone and dial it—are good ways to work your memory.

And experts add—the more time spent training the brain, the better the results.
