CBS11: Learning to Walk the Walk

July 26, 2010 – After a devastating car accident, Scotty Marshall and his family were told he would never walk again, but that has all changed in recent months. With the help of a small electronic device called “WalkAide” and Lynn Baron, physical therapist at Baylor Medical Center at Irving, Marshall is slowly learning how to walk on his own. His remarkable story was told on a news broadcast on CBS, Channel 11.

CBS11: Permanent Contraception Procedure

July 26, 2010 – A new form of contraception is now available for women who are ready to stop having children. A new procedure that can be performed in a matter of minutes will permanently prevent women from being able to get pregnant and have more children. Michelle Ho, M.D., with the Baylor Health Care System, discussed the procedure on a recent news story on CBS, Channel 11.

Ben Vereen Vists Baylor's Diabetes Health and Wellness Center

July 23, 2010 – Legendary actor, dancer, and singer, Ben Vereen, visited the new Baylor Diabetes Center in South Dallas. Vereen was diagnosed with diabetes in 2007 and has since been active in educating others about this disease. He is part of the S.T.A.N.D. (Start Taking Action Now for Diabetes) program and made an appearance at the lunch and learn seminar at the Diabetes Health and Wellness Center at the Juanita Craft Rec Center. CBS11: High Cholesterol: A Problem for Both the Young and the Old

July 21, 2010 – A health study shows that high cholesterol is not just a problem for older adults. The study shows that screening rates for younger adults is lower than 50 percent. Michelle Ho, M.D., with Baylor Health Care System discussed the risks associated with high cholesterol and tips for managing your cholesterol level on a recent news story on KTVT-TV, Channel 11 (CBS).

CW33: A Date to the Operating Room

July 21, 2010 – Research shows that couples who have weight loss surgery together lose up to 30% more weight than people who have surgery alone. For the Johnson family, this has proved to be true. Yoli and Brandon Johnson had their weight loss surgeries a month apart at the beginning of 2010 and have lost over 130 pounds together. The director of the Weight Loss Surgery Center at Baylor Grapevine,Sina Martin, M.D., weighed in on the new study during a news story on the CW, Channel 33.

 NBC5: Baylor Employee Bowls for the Gold

July 20, 2010 – The National Kidney Foundation’s Transplant Games are fast approaching and Baylor Transplant Finance Unit employee, Angie Rodriquez, will be there showing off her bowling skills for the first time. But she wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the help of her co-worker at Baylor, Brandon Mason, who donated his kidney to her in 2007. Their story was told on a recent TV story on KXAS-TV, Channel 5 (NBC).

NBC5: Spicy Food May Affect Sleep  

July 15, 2010 -- Spicy food may not just be giving you heartburn, it could be the reason you aren’t sleeping well at night. A recent study showed that men who ate spicy food before bed took longer to fall asleep and spent less time in a deep sleep. Elizabeth Ostrcil, M.D., at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas examined the negative effects spicy food can have on your sleep pattern in a news story on KXAS-TV, Channel 5 (NBC).

July 14, 2010 -- As the debate between the government and the makers of the popular diabetes drug, Avandia, continues a new study is being released showing that Avandia is in fact more dangerous than other diabetes drugs. Michelle Ho, M.D., with Baylor Health Care Systems discussed Avandia and the results of this study on KTVT-TV, Channel 11 (CBS).

 CW33: Dangers of Eating for Two

July 14, 2010 -- Pregnant and eating for two – new research shows that gaining too much weight during pregnancy could cause major health problems down the road. A new study in Australia shows women who gain too much weight while pregnant are five times more likely to be obese in 20 years. Patrick Weix, OB/GYN at Baylor Irving explains the health risks associated with putting on too many pounds during pregnancy on a recent news broadcast on the CW, Channel 33.

July 12, 2010 -- In the kitchen, not having proper knife skills can be a recipe for disaster. The emergency room at Baylor Garland treats about one knife injury per week on average. Any Kahn, M.D., at Baylor Garland identified some of the most common knife injuries seen in the ER during a TV story about learning proper knife skills on KXAS-TV, Channel 5 (NBC).

 CW33: Walking for Better Hearts

July 12, 2010 -- “The Pacemakers,” a walking group at the HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano, have walked over 6,000 miles since February - all without stepping a foot outside. The group of about 90 people walks the sky bridge connecting the HEART HOSPTIAL and Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano 7 times a day, equaling one mile. The benefits and health improvements seen by the members of the group were discussed on a recent TV story on the CW, Channel 33.

 CW33: Teens Going Gaga Over Contact Lenses 

July 7, 2010 -- Lady Gaga inspired circle contact lenses are becoming more popular among teens, but wearing contacts without a prescription could have serious consequences. Covering the iris and some of the surrounding white part of the eye, circle lenses make eyes appear bigger. Dr. Marvin Hsiao, ophthalmologist at Baylor Carrollton, discussed the importance of seeing an eye doctor before purchasing corrective or cosmetic lenses in a recent news story on the CW, Channel 33.

CBS11: Soldier Brings Smiles to Patients – From His Wheelchair

July 2, 2010 -- Being wounded in battle and wheelchair bound for life could eliminate one’s desire to serve their country, but not this solider. Former Green Beret, Jason Morgan, and his service dog are now serving their country by bring comfort and encouragement to the patients at Plano’s Baylor Regional Medical Center. Their story was told on a recent news broadcast on KTVT-TV, Channel 11 (CBS).

FOX4: Plano Hospital Volunteers Named Hometown Heros

June 14, 2010 -- Baylor Regional Medical Center in Plano has a unique program for a certain group of people who just can't stay away. Retired registered nurses can still do what they love to do as volunteers in The Nightingales program. This is The Nightingales motto: "Ask permission to do a task and report back when you have completed that task." They don't act on their own; they assist nurses and help patients.  Clarice Tinsley, Fox 4 anchor, interviewed retired nurses/co-coordinators Gigi Steele and Jo Cole about the nursing volunteers. WFAA: Dr. Hebert Answers Health HouseCall Questions

June 11, 2010  -- Dallas area spray parks are posting signs reminding people how to prevent the sickness caused by the parasite cryptosporidium. It was WFAA's Janet St. James who first traced the parasite's spread to a Dallas spray ground. Also, WFAA is answering viewer health questions as part of a segment called "Housecalls." Friday, WFAA asked Dr. Emily Hebert, on staff at Baylor University Medical Center, to provide medical answers. Watch Video

 

CBS11: Are Vitamins Necessary? Some Say Maybe Not

June 9, 2010 – Growing up, we were told to “take your vitamins”. But, are they really necessary? Dr. Mara Cunningham, on staff at Baylor Medical Center at Irving, gave tips about the pros and cons of taking vitamins and what to look for when purchasing them.  While vitamins can be a useful supplement to a person’s diet, Dr. Cunningham urged people to regularly eat balanced meals first.

CW33: Baylor Cardiologist Says VideoGaming May Lead to Heart Disease

June 9, 2010 -- Video gamers spend countless hours on the couch in front of a screen. And a new study looked into just how unhealthy that sedentary lifestyle is. Researchers found pro gamers have the mental clarity of real athletes, but are physically more like 60 year old chain smokers. Baylor and the City of Dallas Partner to Fight Diabetes in South Dallas

June 7, 2010 -- In a unique public/private partnership, the Baylor Health Care System has spent the past year transforming South Dallas’ Juanita J. Craft Recreation Center into the area’s first and only Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute set to open June 7.  Baylor is investing $15 million into the initiative with the mission of saving lives through a new model of care that could ultimately influence the way our country approaches chronic disease.   The Institute will uniquely be focused on prevention, wellness and improving the overall health of the South Dallas community.  It will offer a clinic staffed by physicians, nurses, care coordinators and diabetes education specialists.  It will also offer cooking and exercise classes, affordable medications and other medical supplies, as well as a farmers market selling fresh foods.

WFAA: Could Vacationing During the Oil Spill Affect Your Health?

CW33: 10-Year-Old Slashes Cholesterol by Not Eating School Lunches

June 3, 2010 -- Dr. Jane Sadler, family medicine physician at Baylor Garland, appeared in a CW33 story about a ten-year-old patient, Mary Harris. The young girl took charge of her own health to lose weight and increase physical activity, which ultimately improved her cholesterol scores.  Mary’s determination even changed the way her entire family eats.
