Joel Allison, president and CEO of Baylor Health Care System, was invited to speak Friday, April 16, to local business leaders regarding health care reform. Allison discussed “The Good, The Bad and the Ugly” of Health Care Reform. In his presentation, Allison explained why there is a need for health care reform; provided an overview of the recently passed bill; detailed short- and long-term implications and discussed reform in Texas. According to Allison, the “good” aspects of health care reform include more individuals having health care coverage; the exclusion of pre-existing conditions in determining eligibility for coverage; emphasis on wellness and prevention and paying for quality. The “bad” features include not enough providers; coverage not equaling access and not addressing undocumented workers. The process used to pass legislation and rule-making are what Allison considers the “ugly” of health care reform.
