The neonatology team at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas is committed to advancing medical care for premature babies through clinical research. Our most current project involves the research of silver alginate (AlgidexTM) patches.
Central lines are necessary for nutrition and hydration in very small premature babies. However, these lines can also increase the chances of infection. Silver alginate dressings have been shown to decrease infections from central lines in adults. The research staff for Baylor neonatology is studying these patches to see if they are safe and effective in preventing infection in the very smallest babies (less than 3.3 pounds at birth).
