About Us

BIR is a 92-bed not-for-profit hospital dedicated to restoring an individual’s independence, self-confidence and vision of the future after a traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke or other orthopaedic or neurological disorder.

Your Treatment Team 

Whatever your rehabilitation needs, you’ll quickly discover what many Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation patients have found to be true. It takes a whole team to win. 

Our treatment teams surround you with expert clinical care, as well as a soft touch. We understand that your life has been turned upside down. Whether you’ve lost the ability to walk and talk or to remember and reason, we’ll partner with you to help you achieve the greatest level of independence possible.

Team Members

Your family and friends can make your healing journey better, and they are invited to participate in therapy and activities.

Your Physiatrist, a physician who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation, will be primarily responsible for your care.

Your Clinical Nurse Coordinator coordinates the efforts of all the team members involved in your care, and will be the point person for information about your progress.

Your Occupational Therapist helps you with self-care, home-management and prescribing assistive technology if needed.

Your Physical Therapist works with you on leg mobility and/or wheelchair use.

Your Speech-Language Pathologist helps with communication skills and, if applicable, with assessing and treating swallowing difficulties. 

Your neuropsychologist provides treatment related to thinking, new learning, memory, emotional wellbeing and behavior. Counseling for sensitive issues is offered in an individual setting. 

Your Therapeutic Recreation Specialist helps you overcome physical, cognitive, social and emotional issues that may interfere with leisure and community activities.
