Blood & Marrow Transplant Program 

Blood and marrow transplants are among the most effective treatments for certain hematologic and lymphatic cancers. Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center features one of the leading blood and bone marrow transplant (BMT) programs in the US. 

Center of Excellence

The BMT program is designated a Center of Excellence by:
  • Aetna's Institute of Quality for Transplant
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield's Blue Distinction Center for Transplant
  • United Healthcare's OptumHealth Transplant Network

You may be a candidate for an adult blood stem cell or marrow transplant if you are facing a diagnosis of certain cancers, including:

  • Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
  • Acute lymphocytic leukemia
  • Acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Chronic myeloid leukemia
  • Severe aplastic anemia 
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia 
The Blood and Marrow Transplant Program: 
  • Has performed more than 4,600 adult bone marrow and blood stem cell transplants in the past 27 years
  • Is one of the largest BMT transplant center in the US, based on the number of transplants performed.
  • Is one of only eight in the nation and the only one in Texas, that offers all four components of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) - donation, collection, apheresis and transplant.
  • Performed North Texas' first adult marrow transplant in 1983
  • Performed Texas' first matched unrelated donor transplant in 1988
  • Among the first in the US to receive accreditation by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) 
  • Participates in many national clinical trials, including those of the National Institutes of Health Clinical Trials Network and pivotal studies in new drug development.

Currently about 70 percent of patients needing a marrow or adult blood stem cell transplant do not have a suitable match within their family and require the services of the BE THE MATCH Registry.
