Pay Attention to Warning Signs

It's true that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of both men and women. But that doesn't mean the warning signs are always the same between the sexes.  While the most common symptom in men and women in chest pain, women are more likely to experience other symptoms in addition to or  without any chest pain at all. That's why it's important to know all the warning signs and to seek medical attention if you have them:

  • Chest discomfort or pain in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

If you experience symptoms of a heart attack, call 911. To learn more about the cardiology services at Baylor Fort Worth or to find a cardiologist, call 1.800.4BAYLOR or visit BaylorHealth.com/AllSaintsHeart today.
