I need information about...
Registered Dietitians (RDs) are the food and nutrition professionals who can translate the science studies about nutrition into practical advice for a healthy lifestyle. With their nutrition knowledge base, RDs help individuals change their lifestyle in a positive way.
The "RD" credential is a title that can only be used by health professionals who are authorized by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association. In addition, the "LD" (Licensed Dietitian) credential can be used by those dietitians licensed to practice in the state of Texas through the Texas Department of State Health Services.
It is important to know that some RDs may call themselves "nutritionists", but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians. The requirements and definitions for the term "nutritionist" are variable. Some states have licensure laws that define the scope of practice for someone using the title "nutritionist". As of now in the state of Texas, virtually anyone can call themselves a "nutritionist" regardless of training or education.
Practitioners with the RD credential have fulfilled numerous specific requirements, including having earned at least a bachelor's degree (multiple RDs hold advanced degrees as well), completed a supervised practice program and passed a registration examination. Registered Dietitians have all of that in addition to maintaining continuing education requirements for recertification.
