If follow-up training is recommended, a therapist will begin by estimating the number of hours that may be needed for the patient to be comfortable behind the wheel and safe on the road. Since every individual and diagnosis is unique, the training is specific to the needs of the patient. A valid driver’s license or instruction permit is required for follow-up training.
If the need for adaptive equipment in the vehicle is identified, follow-up training will be recommended.
Adaptive driver training focuses on the foundation skills of driving, which are the skills that every driver must be able to learn and perform in order to be a safe, independent driver. They are also the skills that must be maintained throughout the person’s lifetime.
Each of these foundation skills has a very specific technique that must be learned initially. After learning the steps to the technique, the driver must demonstrate consistency in all driving scenarios.
Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Department of Health Services (DHS) guidelines state that when there is a change in a person’s mental or physical condition that could affect his/her ability to operate a vehicle safely, they are responsible for informing the DPS and completing any required testing.
Please note that the Adaptive Driving Program does not substitute for DPS testing. However, the DPS testing requires the demonstration of the foundational skills of driving.
