Migraines have affected people for centuries. Many famous and accomplished people have experienced severe headaches. Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee; great painters Vincent Van Gogh, Georges Seurat and Claude Monet,; and famous authors Virginia Woolfe, Cervantes and Lewis Carroll all experienced migraines. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence during an intense period of productivity after being bedridden for six weeks with a migraine.
About 78 percent of people experience the common tension headache at some point, according to the National Headache Foundation.
But for 3 to 5 percent of the population, headaches are a daily occurrence. In recent years, specialty clinics have popped up nationwide to treat those who have severe, chronic headaches.
This month Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas welcomes Dr. Fred Freitag to its Dallas and Fort Worth Headache Centers that treat patients with a full range of headache disorders.
Although more than 50 million people experience headaches in the United States, people often feel lost when it comes to treating the pain. There are more than 300 causes of headaches, ranging from stress to sinus infections, said Dr. Fred Freitag, research director for the Baylor Headache Center in Dallas, which provides treatment and conducts research protocols. Some headaches are related to weather or hours of daylight; others are linked to medication overuse and hormone levels.
Narrowing the cause and the type of headache a person gets can lead to effective medical or nonmedical treatments.
