While many women are diligent about breast cancer prevention and detection, many don’t know that heart disease will take the lives of nearly twice as many women this year than all forms of cancer, according to the American Heart Association. Take these six steps for a healthier heart:
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, women smokers are two to six times more likely to suffer a heart attack than nonsmoking women. Even secondhand smoke can raise your risk. And within two to three years of quitting, your risk for heart disease can be as low as that of someone who never smoked.
The National Institutes of Health reports that for every 10 percent reduction in cholesterol, your risk for heart disease is reduced by about 20 percent. If you’re over age 45, have it checked annually. To reduce your cholesterol, avoid foods with saturated fats and exercise regularly.
All women ages 18 and older should have their blood pressure checked annually. Because it typically shows no symptoms, it’s essential to keep up with screenings.
A half hour of exercise most days can help you maintain a healthy weight, reduce stress and keep your heart healthier. Vigorous, aerobic exercise may help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Always check with your physician before beginning an exercise program.
Being overweight or obese increases your blood pressure and cholesterol and places you at greater risk for diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Even a modest weight loss of 10 pounds can lower your risk.
Given the prevalence of cardiovascular disease and the risk factors that can’t be changed—family history, age, gender—it’s essential to pay attention to your risk factors and overall health. It’s never too early to start making the healthier lifestyle choices above.
