The Epilepsy Program at Baylor, part of the Baylor Neuroscience Center, is a comprehensive program for the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of seizure disorders. A technologically advanced six-bed inpatient Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) offers continuous video electroencephalography, ictal SPECT and intracranial electrode monitoring.
Additional diagnostic technologies include high-resolution MRI, MR spectroscopy, functional MRI and PET (positron emitted tomography), Wada testing (intracarotid brevital injection) and intraoperative cortical brain mapping. Patients with medically refractory cases of epilepsy may qualify for surgical treatment, part of the seizure disorder services, including vagus nerve stimulator implantation, mesial temporal resection or extratemporal epilepsy surgery.
At the Baylor Neuroscience Center EMU, patients are treated by a multidisciplinary team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and nuclear medicine specialists on the medical staff, EEG technologists, and specially trained nurses and allied health professionals.
