Lymphedema Program 

Lymphedema has many causes:
  • Trauma
  • Surgical Intervention
  • Infection
  • Radiation Treatment 

Lymphedema may develop months or even years after a procedure.

Lymphedema may be characterized by:
  • Swelling characterized by “pitting”- recognizable when skin is depressed for a few seconds and the indentation does not immediately disappear
  • A tightness or heaviness in the affected area
  • Changes in the texture of the skin

Baylor provides Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) :
  • Manual lymphatic drainage
  • Compression bandaging
  • Review of lymphedema precautions
  • Strengthening and flexibility exercises

Therapy sessions are usually one hour in length and patients usually attend therapy three times a week.

Patients may be referred to the Lymphedema Clinic by their PCP, surgeon or oncologist.

Since there is no cure for lymphedema, the primary goal of treatment is to reduce the swelling and to maintain the reduction through patient education of lifelong home program of compression with bandaging or garments.
