Limb Salvage Treatment

What is the goal of treatment to prevent the loss of the limb and to preserve its function when an arm or leg is severely injured or crushed?  After the initial injury and blood loss are treated, complications may develop if there is reduced blood flow in the injured limb. If there is a lower-than-normal level of oxygen in the blood the body can’t fight infection or produce healthy cells to repair muscle, bone and skin. In serious cases the limb may die as infection continues to grow.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBOT)   Rapid intervention with HBOT therapy reduces damage to nerves and tissue. Limbs are treated quickly, within hours of the initial injury for the best result. HBOT boosts oxygen levels to encourage the development of new capillaries to nourish tissues and reabsorb fluid produced by swelling--both of which are essential to preserve health and function in the recovery of a limb.

At Baylor Dallas, wound care specialists create a plan for the frequency and duration of therapy to give each patient the best chance for success.
