Soft-tissue Damage from Skin Grafts

Grafts may be necessary to help wounds heal in traumatic injuries or deep burns where there is a large amount of skin loss. This procedure usually involves removing a layer of healthy skin from another part of the body and transferring it to cover the wounded area. Survival of the skin graft depends on adequate oxygen and blood flow in both the wound and the transplanted skin. Obstacles to healing may occur when underlying chronic conditions are present that may affect good circulation.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBOT)

Grafts that fail to improve with standard therapies stabilize and recover with HBOT. This therapy boosts the oxygen content in the blood to a level that promotes the growth of new capillaries. These tiny blood vessels bathe skin cells with nutrients and help remove excess fluid in tissues that can counteract or slow healing.

At Baylor Dallas, wound care specialists monitor the duration and frequency of each patient’s therapy to achieve the best possible result.
