VIDEO: What Is A Genetic Counselor?
Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas is proud to offer a cancer genetic counseling program that allows specially trained genetic counselors to assess an individual’s risk to have a hereditary form of cancer. Our genetic counselors assess for many hereditary cancer syndromes. During a genetic counseling session, information is provided on the risk to develop cancer, surveillance and early detection options, genetic testing, as well as some prevention strategies and treatment options. When to consider genetic counseling?
What happens in a genetic counseling session:
There is a nominal fee for genetic counseling billed to insurance companies. Genetic testing is billed separately and is often covered by your insurance company when certain criteria on your personal and/or family history of cancer are met.
