Cervical Cancer 

Cervical cancer occurs in the cervix, which is in the lower part of the uterus. It is caused by several types of the human papillomavirus (HPV) that spreads through sexual contact. Some women are able to fight off exposure to HPV, while in others the virus develops into cervical cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 12,200 new cases of cervical cancer will be diagnosed this year in the U.S.

The Importance of Pap Smears

While cervical cancer remains the number one cause of gynecologic cancer death in the world, widespread use of pap smears in this country has led to earlier detection and reduced mortality rates. Unfortunately, almost half of the women diagnosed with cervical cancer in the U.S. have not had a pap smear in the preceding five years.

When it is found and treated early, cervical cancer often can be cured.
