Ovarian Cancer

The ACS estimates that 21,000 American women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year. Ovarian cancer occurs in the ovaries, the female reproductive organs that produce eggs. It usually affects women older than 50, but can affect younger women as well. It is uncommon in women under 30.

Ovarian cancer is difficult to detect and women often have few or no symptoms until the disease has reached an advanced stage.  When diagnosed in stage I the estimated cure rate is more than 90 percent, but most women are not diagnosed until stage III or IV. Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of gynecological cancer death in the United States.

Clinical trials are underway that may help develop a valid screening method for ovarian cancer.
