Chronic myeloid leukemia starts in cells of bone marrow and rapidly involves the blood. It is usually caused by an abnormality of the Philadelphia chromosome. It most often affects adults and can be stable for several months, but, if left untreated, can change into a fast-moving, acute, rapidly fatal form of leukemia.
