Multiple myeloma occurs when malignant plasma cells in bone marrow grow out of control. Excess plasma cells can cause problems in the bone marrow where the blood cells are made, including anemia, caused by inadequate numbers of red blood cells; excessive bleeding caused by inadequate numbers of platelets and lack of resistance to infection caused by inadequate numbers of white blood cells. As the cancer grows, it can cause other complications such as kidney failure and painful destruction of the bones.
