Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. When combined, non-melanoma, the less deadly form of skin cancer, and melanoma, the more deadly type, account for about half of all cancers.
Although skin cancer can be treatable, the number of melanoma cases is on the rise in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimated there were about 59,940 new cases of melanoma in the United States in 2007 and that 10,850 deaths occurred from skin cancer - 8,110 from melanoma and 2,740 from other skin cancers.
