BE THE MATCH Registry - National Marrow Donor Program

is the registry name operated by the National Marrow Donor Program.

If you are searching for a marrow or blood stem cell match or wish to donate the gift of life, please call 214.820.8165.

As of June 2009, a total of 50,216 people have joined the BE THE MATCH Registry at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas as potential donors of stem cell and marrow.

Donors at BE THE MATCH Registry at Baylor Dallas have given the gift of life to more than 300 patients in need through 247 bone marrow collections and 53 peripheral blood stem cell collections. Since its inception, Baylor's Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) program has facilitated 775 unrelated adult stem cell transplants for Baylor Dallas patients.

Currently, about 70 percent of patients searching for a marrow or blood stem cell transplant do not find a suitable match within their family and request these services of the BE THE MATCH Registry. Even with a registry of more than seven million, many patients cannot find a match.

Donors with diverse, racial or ethnic backgrounds are especially needed.

Baylor Dallas is one of only eight programs nationwide and the only program in Texas, to offer all four components of the National Marrow Donor Program:

  • Donor center
  • Bone marrow collection center
  • Apheresis collection center
  • Transplant center

The Baylor Dallas BMT transplant center staff is responsible for searching national and international registries to seek suitable matches for patients in need of unrelated marrow and stem cell transplants.

The donor center recruits new donors, continually educates registered donors, raises public awareness of the need for unrelated donors and coordinates donors through the steps of the search process and stem cell donation.

An important service the donor center offers is hosting recruitment events on behalf of Baylor Dallas transplant patients. Each year the donor center participates in numerous initiatives to diversify the registry through minority recruitment and community education.

Baylor Dallas apheresis collection center staff collects stem cells from the unrelated volunteer donors for patients in need throughout the network.

Baylor Dallas marrow collection center staff arranges for the collection of bone marrow and provides care for the donors.
