Hometown Heroes: Step Beyond

The Frisco RoughRiders and fans welcomed Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Frisco Hometown Heroes honoree, Frisco Family Services, for an onfield presentation on Saturday, Aug. 24. Baylor Scott & White – Frisco has supported the students of Step Beyond since 2011.

Step Beyond is a vocational program for 18 to 21-year-old adults with special needs who have completed their academic requirements through Frisco ISD. The program allows students to spend a few extra years beyond graduation developing social and occupational skills. In addition to gaining real-world job experience, students attend occupational preparation and community-based vocational instruction classes. With the help of their dedicated instructors, Candace Mimms and Sheila Hooks, these students are learning that real world experience is the best teacher.

Step Beyond has close partnerships with numerous local businesses including Baylor Frisco. The students are provided internship opportunities and work two days a week in several departments throughout the hospital. The staff at Baylor Frisco has enjoyed working with and building lasting friendships with the students.

The ability to offer the students of Step Beyond real life job experiences has been a blessing. Students grow not only in their work skills, but also in their self-esteem and self-advocacy skills throughout their internships.

The Step Beyond coordinators thanked Dr. Jimmy Laferney, Kevin Coats and Margaret Garcia of Baylor Frisco, who worked together with Frisco ISD to establish the program at the hospital, and the Baylor staff for helping them feel like a part of the Baylor family.

Baylor Frisco proudly applauds the instructors and students of the Frisco ISD Step Beyond program.
