All the minimally invasive weight loss procedures offered at Baylor Irving reduce the size of the stomach to limit the amount of food it can hold. As a result, you eat less food and lose weight. You and your surgeon will decide which surgical option is right for you.
Two thirds of the stomach is bypassed by creating a small pouch with the remaining portion of the stomach. The small intestine is then attached to the pouch. The shortened intestine absorbs less food than before. As a result, you absorb less of the food you eat.
The stomach is wrapped with an adjustable silicone band connected to an access port next to the abdominal wall, allowing your physician to increase or decrease the band’s tension by injecting or withdrawing saline.
Stomach volume is decreased by removing a portion of it, such that the remaining part of the stomach is left in the shape of a tube. The part of the stomach that is removed secretes the greatest amount of the hunger hormone Grehlin. By removing this part of the stomach, patients have a significant decrease in appetite, which accompanies early satiety – or satisfaction – from decreased stomach volume.
