Skip the Dry Skin This Winter

Winter is here, and for most people that means the red knuckles, dry hands and cracked skin have already made an appearance. But is there a way to beat dry skin this winter, and keep your skin feeling soft and smooth all season long? Christy Riddle, M.D., dermatologist on the Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano medical staff offers some tips for avoiding dry and itchy skin this winter.

Why is my skin so dry?

Oils protect our skin and make it soft, but we subject our skin to a lot of activities that strip away the oil. These activities include:

  • Washing with unforgiving soaps
  • Soaking in hot baths for extended lengths of time
  • Swimming
  • Wearing itchy clothing
  • Exposing our skin to cold weather
  • Living in indoor heating

How Do I Treat My Dry Skin?

Start with a few basic, at home-remedies to help soften your skin:

  • Over-the-counter moisturizers
  • Sleep with a humidifier
  • Wash with a gentler soap for a few weeks

If you don’t see an improvement with these methods, schedule an appointment with a dermatologist.

What should I look for when buying a moisturizer?

You don’t have to break the bank to buy a moisturizer that really works. Just read the label, and choose one that has the following ingredients. All of these ingredients will help your skin absorb water and retain it.

  • Ceramides
  • Dimethicone
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Petroleum jelly
