BAYLOR REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER AT PLANO RECOGNIZES PHYSICIANS ON NATIONAL DOCTORS’ DAY

(PLANO, TX – March 29, 2010) – The United States recognizes National Doctors' Day on the 30th of March each year. The day is designed to celebrate the difference physicians make in the lives of people throughout the country.

Doctors’ Day was first observed on March 30, 1933 in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, planned a day to honor physicians. The first celebration involved sending cards to physicians and placing flowers on graves of deceased doctors. Red carnations are commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctor's Day.

On March 30, 1958, the United States House of Representatives adopted a resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day. In 1990, legislation was introduced in Congress to establish a national Doctors’ Day. The legislations was overwhelming approved by the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, and on October 30, 1990, President George Bush signed S.J. RES. #366,  which became Public Law 101-473, designating March 30th as "National Doctors’ Day."
