Green Living Tips

Green Tips for the Home

  • Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps.
  • In the summer, close drapes and blinds during the heat of the day to shade your home’s interior. Open in the winter to help heat your home.
  • Caulk windows and doors.
  • Use ceiling fans in occupied rooms.
  • Leave your grass clippings on your lawn to naturally fertilize your lawn, or compost your clippings.
  • Use cloth napkins instead of paper.
  • Use sponges instead of paper towels.
  • Store food in reusable containers.
  • Reuse plastic bags and aluminum foil.
  • Turn off lights and electronics when not in use.
  • Buy energy efficient appliances.
  • Clean dryer lint trap after each use. Llint is compost material.
  • Turn off water while brushing your teeth and save 6 gallons/day.
  • Keep your car tuned up and tires properly inflated.
  • Carpool, take DART, ride a bike, or walk.
  • Take shorter showers.
  • Go to the library to read newspapers, magazines, or books, or read online books instead of purchasing them.
  • If you take your own lunch to work, consider a reusable lunch bag.
  • Save 150 gallons of water by sweeping your driveway instead of hosing off.

Animal Waste Facts and Disposal Tips:

• 1.2 million registered dogs in the metroplex produce approximately 900,000 pounds of waste daily.
• Pet waste can pollute local creeks, lakes, and rivers.
• Toss pet’s waste into a trash can: tie the pet waste bag shut then place it in a lined trash can.
• Dog waste can be flushed down the toilet, but remember to not flush the bags.
