Is A Hip Replacement For Me?
If you’re struggling with chronic hip pain, hip arthritis or loss of movement in your hip, you may wonder if a hip replacement is the right next step for you.
Charles Toulson, M.D., orthopedic surgeon and medical director of the Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano Total Joint Replacement Center answers a few common questions about hip replacement.
What Is A Hip Replacement?
Hip replacements are usually used to help people who have experienced hip damage from an injury or arthritis. Hip replacements involve replacing a damaged hip with an artificial hip. Hip replacements and implants have made much progress in the last several years, and replacements can help ease pain and increase range of motion.
Why Should I Have A Hip Replacement?
If you have been forced to reduce your activity level because of hip pain or lack of mobility, then you may be a good candidate for hip replacement. Every person’s situation is unique, and surgery isn’t the only option for treating hip pain though, so be sure to visit your doctor to see which treatments he recommends for you. Possible treatment options that your doctor may prescribe include medication to relieve pain, physical rehabilitation and working out.
What Causes Hip Damage?
There are many conditions that can lead to hip damage, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and falls. Osteoarthritis, the most common type of arthritis, develops from the wearing down of your joints.
How Can I Protect My Hips?
Pushing, jerking or twisting your hips can be painful and lead to damage. Consider ways you can stay away from overusing your joints. If you have pain, rest, and don’t try to just push through the pain. This can cause more pain and damage in the long-run.
