Cancer Early Detection

Early Detection

Finding head and neck cancer early can help you get treatment before cancer has spread. Regular dental checks play a part in early detection. In fact, our medical director of surgical oncology, Robert Steckler, M.D., also serves as chief of dental oncology for Baylor College of Dentistry. This close connection means the dentists and oral surgeons of tomorrow receive expert training on how to spot head and neck cancer.

You can also be alert for signs of cancer, including:

  • Mouth sores that don’t heal
  • Difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing
  • A lump in your neck
  • A change in your voice

If head or neck cancer is suspected, Baylor Plano has an array of diagnostic options to pinpoint—or rule out—cancer.

Diagnostic Techniques

Depending on the location of the suspected cancer, a variety of diagnostic tests and tools may be used. These include:

Each summer, men can take advantage of free head and neck cancer screenings at Baylor Plano’s “It’s a Guy Thing” health event. Held each June, the event also provides free prostate cancer, cholesterol, blood pressure and other screenings that help men learn about their health. Call 1-800-4BAYLOR to find out more.
