I need information about...
Sometimes a trip to the ED is in order. If you do have to go, keep these things in mind:
Help them get to know you: The more information you can give doctors in an emergency, the better. They don’t know your history like your primary care physician does. So, if possible, carry with you a list of medications you’re taking, including how often and at what doses (or just bring all of your medications with you), any allergies you have, immunization records, dates of past surgeries or illnesses, as well as the name and phone number of your regular doctor and any other physicians who have treated you.
Understand triage: In an emergency department, the sickest or most severely injured patients take precedence. It doesn’t mean that your illness/injury isn’t a priority. But be prepared to wait for treatment, particularly on weekends or at night. The emergency room staff will do everything they can to make sure you received treatment quickly. And be sure to let them know if you start feeling worse or are experiencing new symptoms while you wait.
