Gastric banding works by placing a small bracelet-like band around the top of the stomach to restrict the amount of food that can be consumed. As a result, you experience an earlier sensation of “fullness” and are satisfied with smaller amounts of food.
This laparoscopic procedure is the only weight loss surgery in the U.S. that is adjustable and reversible. With no cutting, stapling or intestinal rerouting, the gastric band generally leads to less pain and quicker recovery.
Because the gastric band procedure is adjustable, it can work with your individual needs. For example, pregnant patients can loosen the band to allow adequate nutrition. Patients who are not experiencing significant weight loss can have the band tightened.
