Gastric bypass surgery makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. This restricts food intake and calorie absorption.
The most common gastric bypass surgery is Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, in which the stomach is made smaller by creating a pouch. This pouch, or smaller stomach, is connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine.
The result is you will feel full more quickly—and consume fewer calories—than when your stomach was its original size. Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed in the digestive tract.
It is important to remember gastric bypass surgery creates a much smaller stomach, and may require you to eat only a few ounces of food at a time. Recovery from surgery takes from two to four weeks.
