What is Obesity?

In simplest terms, obesity is defined as an excessive amount of body fat. Those with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more are considered obese. Morbid obesity, also called extreme obesity, is defined as having a body mass index of 40 or more.  

What Causes Obesity?

Several different factors cause obesity, including: 
  • Genetics. Obesity seems to run in families. 
  • Lifestyle. What you eat and how much you exercise plays a role.
  • Traditions. Some family get-togethers center around cultural traditions involving unhealthy foods or large portions of food. Here’s how to host a healthy barbeque.
  • Technology. Reliance on elevators, cars, televisions and computers has led to sedentary lifestyle at work and home. Overcome your exercise excuses and get moving.
  • Environmental factors. How many sidewalks are in your neighborhood? How many fast food restaurants? How many vending machines are at work? Find out how you can eat healthy on a budget.
  • Medical conditions or medications. Some illnesses or medications are associated with obesity, including having hypothyroidism or taking steroids, antidepressants, and seizure disorder drugs.
