Daytime Emmy Award-winning actress, comedienne and author Sherri Shepherd headlined the fourth annual DHWI Healthy Harvest Fun Walk/5K Run and Diabetes Expo, an awareness and fundraising initiative benefiting Baylor’s Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute (DHWI) in South Dallas. More than 900 people turned out for a morning full of fun activities and education. The event, which was emceed by WFAA Channel 8 news anchor John McCaa, drew people together in a healthy activity for a worthy cause: raising money for the programs and services of the Institute.
Shepherd, who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, recounted her personal and family’s struggle with the disease with her usual sharp sense of humor.“My whole family has diabetes,” Shepherd told a captive audience. “We call it the diabetes hall of fame.”
Shepherd’s mother passed away at 41 from diabetes-related complications. Her passing had a profound impact on Shepherd, and after being diagnosed with diabetes seven years ago, Shepherd was afraid. “I had to change things around,” Shepherd said. “Otherwise I was going to do to my son what my mother did to me."
Shepherd heaped praise on the services provided by DHWI, including the free cooking, exercise and diabetes management classes offered through the Institute to members of the community with diabetes or at risk of getting the disease.
"I wish there was a center like this when I was diagnosed with diabetes, so people could have helped me,” said Shepherd. “I was on my own." After listening to Shepherd’s story, as well as inspirational words from Baylor Scott & White Health CEO Joel Allison and DHWI president Charles Bell, MD, hundreds of walkers and runners gathered at the starting line for the event’s Fun Walk/5K Run.
In addition to an entertaining talk from Sherri Shepherd and the fun walk and 5k run, those in attendance also enjoyed a diabetes expo, featuring:
The event raised more than $170,000 for DHWI, which will go a long way in helping provide critical services to those in need, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
Thanks to everyone who participated, and we look forward to seeing you next year!
