Treatment Options

Types of Weight Loss Surgery

There are several different surgical options that may help some patients control their weight problem. The Baylor Weight Loss Management and Surgery Program offers two types of minimally invasive surgical weight loss procedures. Either procedure can be reversed through revisional surgery if results of a prior gastric surgery are unsatisfactory or if other issues indicate a reversal. Most revisional surgeries performed at Baylor are laparoscopic.

Gastric Sleeve

In a gastric sleeve procedure, stomach volume is decreased by removing a portion of it, such that the remaining part of the stomach is left in the shape of a tube. The part of the stomach that is removed secretes the greatest amount of the hunger hormone Grehlin. By removing this part of the stomach, patients have a significant decrease in appetite, which accompanies early satiety or satisfaction from decreased stomach volume.

During gastric band procedures, the stomach size is reduced to limit the amount of food it holds. As a result, you eat less food and lose weight. In gastric band procedures, the stomach is wrapped with an adjustable silicone band connected to an access port next to the abdominal wall, allowing your physician to increase or decrease the band's tension by injecting or withdrawing saline.
