EveryMan

Getting regular screenings for prostate cancer may save a man’s life, former New York City mayor and presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani said at the second annual EveryMan® dinner.

He is familiar with the subject. Giuliani was diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer in 2000, and his father died of the disease in 1981.

“Getting that screening and catching the disease early made all the difference,” Giuliani said on May 13 at the Ritz-Carlton in Dallas. “I was able to be treated and make a full recovery because my doctors found it before it had progressed too far.”

EveryMan® benefits prostate cancer research, education, community outreach and expanded technology throughout Baylor Health Care System.

Nearly 500 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed every day in the United States, making it the second-most common form of cancer in men.

Before dinner, guests were able to interact with the da Vinci® surgical robot, which is used for advanced surgical procedures, and speak with Matthew Shuford, M.D., a urologist on the medical staff at Baylor University Medical Center.

Thomas O. Hicks, chairman and chief executive officer of Hicks Holdings LLC, was the event’s honorary chairman and introduced Giuliani.

After dinner, Giuliani shared stories during an informal chat with Foundation board member and former business partner Roy Bailey. Robert Schoenvogel, M.D., a urologist on the medical staff at Baylor Dallas, contributed his expertise.

Giuliani also got a surprise from Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, who offered the diehard Yankees fan an autographed baseball via video. Guests walked away with copies of Giuliani’s book, Leadership.

The event was made possible by the support of many major donors: The Melchizedek Fund of Communities Foundation of Texas, Lana and Barry Andrews, Community Trust Bank of Texas, Newman Foundation, Perkins+Will, Harold Simmons, Texas Oncology, Westwood Trust, BremnerDuke Healthcare Real Estate, Nancy and David Burgher Sr., Nancy and Dan Chapman, Kimberly and Joe Colonnetta, Thomas O. and Cinda Hicks, Diane and Jim Hobbs, Ron Murff, PlainsCapital Corporation, Michal and Loyd W.
