Highlights

Imaging Services
Baylor Southwest offers an advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit, a 40-slice CT scanner that can accommodate patients who weigh up to 615 pounds. Other imaging services include digital fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine and diagnostic ultrasound.

Women’s and Children’s Services
Baylor Southwest’s childbirth center houses nine labor-delivery-recovery (LDR) rooms. The LDR concept allows expecting parents and their families more flexibility and comfort as they welcome a new child. In addition, Baylor Southwest is the birthing hospital for the Gladney Center for Adoption.

Diabetes Education Program
At Baylor Southwest, a team of certified diabetes educators and registered dietitians teach patients to self-manage their disease by learning how to control blood sugar through nutrition, staying active and understanding proper medical care. The program is based on the National Standards of Diabetes Self-Management Education.

Weight Management and Surgery Program
Clinicians at Baylor Southwest assist patients in their struggle with obesity. A team of physicians trained in weight management lead the LEARN® weight management program, which consists of a 12-week weight loss curriculum with components of education, counseling and support groups. For those who have tried to lose weight by other means and have been unsuccessful, the Baylor Southwest weight loss surgery program offers three types of minimally invasive weight loss surgery: Lap-Band®, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and Gastric Sleeve. The surgical component of the program is modeled after the program at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, recognized as one of the leading surgical weight loss programs in the United States.

Endoscopy Services
Baylor Southwest offers an advanced endoscopy suite with two procedure rooms, including a room with the negative air pressure feature necessary to perform bronchoscopies. This diagnostic procedure allows pulmonologists to collect lung secretions and tissue specimens. Gastroenterologists use the suite to perform colonoscopies and other diagnostic procedures to detect ulcers, inflammation, tumors and infections.

Surgical Services
Baylor Southwest surgical services include six day surgery rooms and four operating rooms, providing complete services for general, orthopaedic (specialized joint replacement program), otolaryngological (ear, nose and throat), gynecological, urological, and plastic and weight loss surgeries.

Emergency Services
Baylor Southwest provides emergency care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The physicians on the medical staff and the nursing staff represent years of experience and training and are supported by the full capabilities of the hospital.

Community Programs

For fiscal year 2007, Baylor Health Care System will report $390 million* in community benefit, which includes providing care for charity patients and patients enrolled in government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, as well as the unreimbursed costs of medical education, research and community programs.
