(FORT WORTH, Texas, February 23, 2007) - Baylor All Saints Medical Centers announced today that Denise Smith, R.N. was the January 2007 recipient of the DAISY Award. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem.
Smith, who is in the research float pool, is frequently requested by every unit because of her caring attitude, says Sherree Bennett, nurse manager of the Progressive Care Unit. "She is a great nurse and takes great care of her patients. It takes a special person to walk into the facility every day to work in a different unit and be able to pull that off."
A patient's family member wrote a letter of appreciation regarding Denise's care and compassion. Some of his comments included: "Denise was one of the kindest and most compassionate people I have ever met. She interacted with each member of our family with an attitude of concern and sympathy. Denise went beyond the call of duty and was amazing in restoring calm and peace to each of us during such a traumatic time in our lives."
The DAISY Award is a nation-wide program that rewards excellence in nursing. The award was created by the Foundation for the Elimination of Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem and recognizes the clinical skills, extraordinary compassion and care exhibited by nurses every day. It is given monthly to an outstanding nurse in more than 100 hospitals across the United States. Patients, visitors, employees or physicians may nominate a deserving nurse.
The DAISY Foundation was established in 2000 by the Barnes family in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. Having been touched by the remarkable care, clinical skills and compassion demonstrated by nurses during Patrick's illness, the Barnes family made it their mission to recognize exceptional nurses around the country.
The DAISY Award is funded by the Faxel Endowment for Nurses. Ralph and Dee Faxel established the Faxel Endowment for Nurses through the All Saints Health Foundation. This fund provides scholarships, continuing education and certification assistance specifically for nursing.
