Week of February 4 - Low-fat is always better right? Not necessarily say researchers who recently found eating high-fat dairy foods may boost your fertility. Dr. David Winter tells us more in tonight’s HealthSource report.

DR. WINTER
Need another reason to eat ice cream? According to a new study-- doing so may significantly improve your odds of getting pregnant.

“The women who had a serving or more a day of the regular-fat dairy had about a 25% reduction in infertility versus the average population.”

DR. WINTER
Researchers also found that women who regularly ate low-fat dairy foods had an 85% higher risk of ovulation problems.

DR. PATRICK WEIX
“I think the researchers who did this were a little more surprised because there is this prevailing thought that fat is the enemy.”

DR. WINTER
So what’s the scoop… how may dairy in the diet effect fertility?

DR. PATRICK WEIX
“When women are eating low-fat dairy you have to wonder are they excluding fats from other parts of their diet and we know a certain amount of a healthy fat intake is important.”

DR. WINTER
Natural fats are the basis of certain hormones made in the body including estrogen and progesterone… so they are necessary for ovulation. But experts point out this is not a license to load up…

DR. PATRICK WEIX
“What they’re striving for is balance—that they’re not looking to either have a high-fat diet or a really low-fat diet—but a moderate-fat diet is probably going to be their best option for fertility.”
