Top Diet Busters
Week of February 4 - It’s not cheating that kills most diets say experts… it’s actually the foods you assume are harmless that are likely to do you in. In fact the American Dietetic Association has come up with a Top 10 List of Diet Busters. So what tops it? Dr. David Winter tells us in tonight’s HealthSource report.

No hamburgers, no pizza… that’s easy… but experts say it’s the less obvious diet offenders that tend to trip those watching their waist line.

“There are some foods that are considered healthy but can really sabotage your diet if you’re not watching portion control.”
DR. WINTER
Take for instance the not-so-innocent granola bar…
SHANNON WALLACE
“Those granola bars are really high in sugar, really high in calories and can be equivalent to a candy bar.”
DR. WINTER
Also topping the list… that latte.
SHANNON WALLACE
“A typical specialty coffee made with whole milk, whipped cream and sugar can easily add up to four or five-hundred calories.”
DR. WINTER
And don’t grab a bagel for breakfast either… it’s often the calorie equivalent of four slices of bread! Sports drinks, baked chips, applesauce, regular soda and salad dressing also made the list. And the worst diet buster of all…
SHANNON WALLACE
“A lot of your mixed cocktails, especially those that fruit juices can be very high in calories.”
DR. WINTER
So experts say if you’re going to raise a glass… pay attention to how much is in it.
SHANNON WALLACE
“We need to really be careful with the portion size of the drink and how many we have. If we’re going to have a cocktail, try to limit it to one.”
DR. WINTER
If you really want to avoid all the diet pitfalls—your best bet is to read every nutritional label… and the most important thing to look at is the serving size. It may say it’s only 100 calories, but that could be for just a few chips… not for half the bag!
