Caffeine Helps Women But Not Men Stay Sharp

Week of February 4 - Looking for ways to keep your mind sharp through the years? Researchers say there may be an extra perk to your morning routine. Dr. David Winter explains in tonight’s HealthSource report.

DR. WINTER
We already know it can wake you up… but can it keep your brain awake through the years? In a new study—researchers discovered that women who drank three or more cups of coffee a day stayed sharper as they aged.

“They had less of a decline, especially in verbal skills. However men did not show this response to caffeine.”

DR. WINTER
Experts are not sure why only women seem to benefit…

DR. FRANCES DILLEY
“This was surprising and I would think now that they would want to go and design another study trying to determine why it affected men and women differently.”

DR. WINTER
But they do have a theory as to why caffeine may help minds and specifically memory.

DR. FRANCES DILLEY
“It’s possibly related to the fact that caffeine can stimulate dopamine release in the brain.”

DR. WINTER
So do the new findings mean women should start drinking coffee if they don’t already do so? Experts say maybe—but there’s no need to pour it on.

DR. FRANCES DILLEY
“I would continue to recommend to drink caffeine in moderation… one to two a day at the most.”

The study also found that drinking three cups of tea daily had the same positive effects.
