Can a Fertility Diet Get You Pregnant?
Week of February 25 - With more than seven million Americans struggling with infertility it’s no wonder why a new book promoting a “get-pregnant-diet” is so popular. But is there real science behind the promise? Dr. David Winter tells us in tonight’s HealthSource report.
DR. WINTER
Can you eat your way to infertility? Researchers say “yes.”
DR. J. MICHAEL PUTNAM
Reproductive Endocrinologist
Baylor University Medical Center
“If you’re overweight, there are a lot of things going on especially with your insulin levels that can actually set a whole cascade of problems that can keep you from ovulating.”
DR. WINTER
So the authors of the new book-- “The Fertility Diet” argue adopting more heart-healthy eating habits can have the opposite effect.
DR. J. MICHAEL PUTNAM
“If you can reduce the weight and reduce the fat through the diet you’re going to change that.”
DR. WINTER
The diet itself isn’t revolutionary… more fruits and veggies, whole grains, and less meat and trans fats. And yes, there is scientific data that proves it works.
DR. J. MICHAEL PUTNAM
“The good part of this book is that it may raise awareness that a heart-healthy diet, eating the right way, exercising, trying to get your weight to a proper level is going to help.”
DR. WINTER
But experts warn it’s not the answer for all women dealing with infertility…
DR. J. MICHAEL PUTNAM
“This really addresses about a third of the women who have irregular ovulation or ovulation problems. So all the other aspects of infertility this really doesn’t address.”
DR. WINTER
Although eating better of course won’t hurt your chances of conceiving—getting on “The Fertility Diet” may not help either.
DR. J. MICHAEL PUTNAM
“To quote the lead author… it is not the cure for infertility.”
DR. WINTER

The book also advises women to take a multivitamin with folic acid. Studies have shown that can not only improve a woman’s odds of getting pregnant—it can make it more likely for her to have twins.
