Sports Medicine Program Accelerates Healing
Baylor All Saints Medical Center at Fort Worth's sports medicine program is changing lives one workout at a time. According to America Sports Data, Inc., sports injuries in the U. S. are becoming more prevalent and all age groups are affected. The sports medicine program at Baylor Fort Worth is not only for athletes, but also for "weekend warriors." The program differs from traditional therapy and can safely accelerate the healing process. Standard diagnosis, treatments and rehabilitation is the traditional therapy. The Baylor Fort Worth sports medicine team takes the traditional therapy a little further. The sports medicine team evaluates body mechanics to prevent re-injury and designs conditioning programs for pre-season or off-season training. The team also works with individuals to help boost their performance, endurance, strength, flexibility, balance and more.
"Most of the Baylor sports team members are athletes themselves," said Omar Selod, D. O., medical director of the Baylor Fort Worth outpatient rehabilitation program. "We are better able to understand athletes' needs and wants because our team understands the desire to return to play at the highest level possible. We understand the rehabilitation, conditioning principles and mechanics of the sport. We are able to create a detailed therapeutic prescription plan which looks at the individual's injury, their strength and flexibility specific to the needs of their sport. We develop a plan that not only decreases their pain, but also increases their functional ability to play their sport or activity."
Jasyn Voshell knew the minute he heard the pop and felt the excruciating pain that his right ankle was seriously injured. "I jumped up to hit the ball and landed on someone," said Voshell, captain of an all-male USA Volleyball Association Team.
He was told at the emergency department to stay off his ankle for at least eight to 10 weeks. Fortunately, thanks to Baylor Fort Worth's sports medicine program, Voshell's ankle was strong enough to play part-time within two weeks of his injury. By six weeks, he was ready to participate in the regional championship finals.
"There's no doubt I wouldn't have been back as quickly or as strongly without the sports medicine team."
