The Traumatic Brain Injury Program at Baylor

Each year in the United States, nearly 500,000 people are seen in hospital emergency rooms because of a traumatic brain injury. These patients require immediate and expert medical treatment, including rehabilitation to address the long-term consequences and needs of living with traumatic brain injuries.

Baylor's Traumatic Brain Injury program takes a comprehensive approach to treating traumatic brain injuries. The physicians on the staff at Baylor work with a dedicated team of specially trained therapists and other health care professionals to treat all aspects of a brain injury to help each patient recover as fully as possible.

Baylor Institute of Rehabilitation (BIR) has been named 11 times in U.S. News and World Report as one of the top rehabilitation hospitals in the United States. BIR's Traumatic Brain Injury program has also earned the distinction of being one of only 14 federally designated "model systems" of care in the country for the treatment of people with brain injuries.

Brain injury can significantly affect many cognitive, physical and psychological skills with often devastating results. Every aspect of daily life can be disrupted. Language and communication can be altered, memory and thinking skills can be diminished and some patients may experience paralysis. Often this loss of skills leads to a change in the psychological health the patient and family members. But, with concentrated, effective rehabilitation, many patients can make impressive gains in abilities and quality of life.
