Oncology Program Treatment
The interdisciplinary treatment approach utilized by the Baylor Institute of Rehabilitation includes a physiatrist (a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation), occupational therapist, physical therapist, social worker, care coordinator, and nutrition specialist and may also include a speech-language pathologist, psychologist, neuropsychologist, and respiratory therapist.
The physiatrist provides medical management of the patient, and when necessary, will work in conjunction with a consulting oncologist to meet the needs of the patient. Prior to admission, the physiatrist will consult with the referring physician, and radiation and chemotherapy schedules will be arranged.
Just as a patient with cancer receives specialized treatment such as surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy which benefits him most, rehabilitation treatment plans are individualized to address specific needs. The plan is developed by the treatment team after evaluating the patient, and focuses on improving physical and cognitive skills to assist the patient in everyday living. In therapy, the patient may work on basic functional activities such as dressing, grooming, toileting or feeding; or mobility skills and cognitive abilities including communication, perception, memory and organization.
Each patient is assessed by a registered nutritionist, who recommends nutritional goals and objectives to help the patient regain strength. The nutrition, nursing and occupational therapy staffs then assist the patient in developing appropriate dietary habits. Improved nutrition will help build the patient's endurance and allow better participation in daily therapy.
Needed Support
Patients and their families may benefit from the many support services offered by psychologists, social workers and chaplains. A clinical psychologist may provide individual or group counseling with the patient and his family members. Social workers can serve as a vital link between the family, patient and treatment team and also can provide referrals to support services and community groups specifically for cancer patients. Chaplains are available to provide support throughout the rehabilitation process. Family members are encouraged to participate in therapy and are invited to attend weekly, non-diagnosis specific evening support group meetings.
