Orthopaedic Program Treatment

Our interdisciplinary team of rehabilitation experts specializes in meeting the needs of patients with orthopaedic injuries and impairments. A Baylor physiatrist (a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation) leads the treatment team. Through frequent contact with the patient, team members and patient's surgeon, the physiatrist can better manage the special medical needs of the patient and closely monitor his rehabilitative progress.

The patient's specific needs determine the composition of his rehabilitation team. Each team has a care coordinator who serves as the treatment organizer and assists with insurance issues, and a social worker who assists with any discharge needs.

In addition, the patient may have one or more of the following therapies during their stay.

Specialty Programs
Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation has developed specialized programs for patients with hip fracture, joint replacement and orthopaedic trauma.

Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy focuses on helping the patient increase his ability to perform activities of daily living such as dressing, grooming, bathing, toileting and meal preparation, as well as building the patient's upper body strength and range of motion.

Physical Therapy
Physical therapy helps patients increase their range of motion, strength and mobility, as well as determining equipment needs for after discharge.

Aquatic Therapy
The buoyancy of water allows patients support of injured limbs and provides greater ease of movement. Aquatic therapy is able to focus on improving joint range of motion, muscle strengthening and mobility in a pool.

Therapeutic Recreation
Therapeutic recreation helps patients maintain an active lifestyle through modifying their previous activities or introducing new leisure pursuits.

Clinical Nutrition
Good nutrition is necessary for helping patients improve overall health so they can better participate in therapy.

Needed Support
Because family participation provides the patient with ongoing support that facilitates the rehabilitation process, we strongly encourage direct family participation in therapy, family training, and weekday and weekend activities. By teaching transfer techniques and home programs to the family or caregiver, we can help maximize recovery and smoothly transition the patient back to home.
