Inpatient Rehabilitation
Patients who experience a spinal cord injury may be admitted to the Spinal Cord Injury Program at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation soon after their initial hospital stay to begin regaining as much function as possible and learn to adjust for new limitations. Patients are treated by an interdisciplinary team of spinal cord injury specialists led by a physiatrist who is on the medical staff at Baylor.
Often patients have multiple injuries, which may include broken bones, severe lacerations and burns. In these cases, the physiatrist manages not only the rehabilitation needs of the patient but also the patient's overall condition including the prevention of future complications.
After a comprehensive evaluation, the treatment team, patient and family work together to set realistic, attainable treatment goals. The treatment team will then meet on a weekly basis to discuss the progress of the patient and update the treatment plan and discharge date as needed. The patient and family members may participate in designated team meetings throughout the program.
